UN flotilla panel could be appointed by end of week

GENEVA — The members of a UN-appointed panel to investigate Israel's deadly raid on the Gaza aid flotilla could be named by the end of the week, the chair of the global body's Human Rights Council said Wednesday.

Israel has refused to cooperate with previous probes ordered by the Geneva-based council — which it says is biased against the Jewish state — and shown little indication that it will allow the latest panel to visit the country as part of its mission.

Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand's ambassador to the UN in Geneva and the council's current president, said the panel members will be selected "on the basis of their renowned expertise, independence and impartiality."

"I hope to be in a position to announce their appointment by Friday," Phuangketkeow said in a statement sent to The Associated Press.
