The US National Weather Service on Friday issued a tsunami warning for the west coast of the United States following a huge earthquake that hit Japan on Friday.

A statement released by the service said that a "tsunami warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion, California to the Oregon-Washington border."

The statement added that "a tsunami was generated and is expected to cause damage to the northern California coast."
