US jokes about North Korea artillery firing

A State Department spokesman is denouncing North Korea's firing of artillery near its disputed sea border with South Korea even as he jokes that it "resulted in a lot of dead fish."

P.J. Crowley also said Monday that the firing is unhelpful and that based on North Korea's past actions "we're likely to see more provocations."He says it is unclear what North Korea is "trying to achieve through this ongoing chest-thumping."

The artillery firing comes amid high tension over the sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea.

It also comes shortly after South Korea ended five-day naval drills off the west coast that the North called a rehearsal for an invasion, vowing to retaliate.
