US sends warship to Mediterranean as part of Iran defense

The United States on Monday sent a warship capable of shooting down ballistic missiles to the Mediterranean Sea as Washington began implementing its plan to protect Europe from a potential Iranian nuclear attack, The Washington Post reported.
The four-phase plan to create a missile shield for Europe was developed by the Obama administration in 2009 and later approved by NATO. Sending the USS Monterey to the Mediterranean marks the beginning of the first step of the European Phased Adaptive Approach.
The plan has been opposed by Russia, which fears the programs radars and interceptors could target Russian warheads.
