US urges citizens, orders some embassy staff to leave Syria

WASHINGTON - The US State Department said on Monday it has ordered some non-essential US embassy officials in Damascus and all embassy dependents to leave Syria because of the "uncertainty and volatility" in the country.
In a travel warning posted on the State Department's website, the US encouraged any of its citizens in Syria to "depart immediately while commercial transportation is readily available," and called on US citizens to defer all travel to Syria.
