White House Chief of Staff highlights refugee plight at hanukkia lighting

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough urged Americans to remember the plight of refugees at this year's National Menorah lighting on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.

"While the light of freedom burns brightly for us and for our generation, it flickers for others: refugees fleeing religious intolerance and oppression, people targeted for their faith, people whose faith is perverted by others. We are Americans and as Americans we do not turn our back on those who seek sanctuary, or stay quite in the face of bigotry or intolerance," said McDonough.

His remarks come as President Obama plans to accept 10,000 refugees from Syria, a plan that has drawn political criticism. Obama has argued refugees will be well screened. But opponents argue the process could allow people with ties to terrorism into the country.
