Zawiyah rebel commander killed in clashes

TRIPOLI - A leader of rebels in Zawiyah was killed in clashes on Friday with forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi trying to retake the rebel-held town near the capital, a rebel spokesman said.
"Many people were killed in Harsha, which is now occupied by them," rebel spokesman Youssef Shagan told Reuters by telephone, referring to a small town just outside Zawiyah.
"They shot at civilians. We still control (Zawiyah's) central square. They are 4 to 5 km away. Our army commander has been killed in Harsha. We have appointed a new one."
