Union Motors Ltd., the licensed importer of Toyota Motor Corporation, on Tuesday notified its agencies and distributors that deliveries of cars will be reduced. The Israeli market would probably feel the reduction in May and June, Union Motors said.
Assuming that Toyota’s factories will resume full production next week, after a monthlong shutdown, Israel could face a shortfall of 2,000 cars, mostly Corollas. Toyota manufactures cars after they have already been ordered, but customers placing new orders may face delays in delivery.
Other importers of Japanese cars said Tuesday the availability of inventory over the next few months would be affected. The importers are waiting for updates from Japan about the return to regular production. Most Japanese carmakers fully or partly shut down their production lines following last month’s earthquake and tsunami.
In its most recent announcement last week, Mazda Motor Corporation said it was resuming partial production at its two factories this week, subject to the availability of parts. The company said a decision on the return to full production of vehicles and spare parts would be made later. The company did not say which models would resume production.
The local shortfall of cars is more than 12,000, or 40 percent of the average number of monthly deliveries, according to industry sources.
