Gov’t approves plan to build haredi city in Harish

The Knesset on Sunday afternoon approved a bill that called for the establishment of a managerial committee to oversee the construction of a large haredi city in the municipality of Katzir-Harish.
The bill, initiated by Construction and Housing Minister Ariel Atias (Shas), seeks to being together director-generals of several government ministries - among them the Education, Construction and Housing, Public Security and National Infrastructures ministries - to ensure the swift and efficient construction of the city.
Earlier on Sunday, secular residents of Harish blocked Highway 65 in protest of the plan, which would expand their community by 1,000 additional dunams to facilitate a population surge of up to 150,000 haredim.
