A government official says 16 people were killed when a speeding bus crashed into a roadside tent where villagers were watching television in northern India.
Vijay Kumar says the driver lost control of the vehicle early Thursday while negotiating a sharp bend in Tandaspur village in Bihar state's Sitamarhi district. Kumar is a district magistrate.
Kumar says 12 people died on the spot and four others succumbed to injuries in a hospital. He says the driver fled the scene after the crash.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading and reckless driving.
