Abramovich elected speaker of Russian province

Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich on Wednesday re-emerged on the country's political scene just three months after quitting as governor of a remote Arctic province. The billionaire owner of Britain's Chelsea soccer club was unanimously elected as the speaker of the regional legislature in Chukotka province, the regional administration said in a statement posted on its Web site. The Kremlin-allied oil tycoon was Chukotka's governor for eight years before President Dmitry Medvedev let him resign in July. Medvedev's predecessor, Vladimir Putin, had refused to accept his resignation. Abramovich is believed to have pumped millions into the region, which has a population of 50,000 and lies opposite Alaska on the Bering Strait. He once lamented that his job as governor was "too expensive." Abramovich, who is widely popular in the region, won a seat in the legislature earlier this month with 97 percent of the vote.
