Albania defense minister resigns after arms depot blast kills 16

Albania's prime minister accepted the resignation Monday of Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu after a series of massive explosions at an ammunition depot near the capital killed at least 16 people and injured nearly 300. Sali Berisha said Mediu's resignation was "an act of political responsibility" for the explosions at the village of Gerdec, about 10 kilometers outside Tirana. The blasts began Saturday and continued for 14 hours, raining artillery shells down on nearby villages and blowing windows out of the country's international airport.
