Archbishop protests attacks on churches in India

An archbishop met with the top official of a southern Indian state Monday to strongly protest recent attacks on churches blamed on Hindu hard-liners. Mobs attacked at least 20 churches throughout Karnataka state 10 days ago, injuring 34 people, including five policemen. Vandals stoned three more churches in the state capital, Bangalore, on Sunday. "I am saying publicly we are very deeply hurt," Bernard Moras, the archbishop of Bangalore, told Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in the presence of reporters. "What will you do if your temple is destroyed?" Moras asked Yeddyurappa, a leader of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party that governs Karnataka state.
