Australia's leader backs UN, accuses Sudan of obstructing Darfur peackeepers

Australia's new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is giving strong backing to the United Nations and accusing Sudan's government of obstructing deployment of UN and African Union peacekeepers in Darfur. Rudd was speaking at a wide-ranging news conference Saturday after an hour-long meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He said the Sudanese government is frustrating international efforts to help end "the humanitarian tragedy" in Darfur, and should be held accountable by the UN Security Council. Rudd announced that Australia will seek a seat on the council for 2013-2014.
