Basque separatist released after 21 years in jail¤

A notorious Basque militant convicted of killing 25 people has been released from prison after serving 21 years. Spanish television broadcast footage of Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos walking out of a prison outside Madrid on Saturday in the company of his wife and two lawyers. De Juan Chaos was arrested in 1987 and convicted two years later of killing 25 people in a string of ETA attacks and sentenced to around 3,000 years in prison. Under the penal code in force then, the most time he could serve was 30 years. He earned time off by studying in jail and through other concessions, and had been due to be released in 2006. But a court then sentenced him to three more years over letters deemed as terrorist threats.
