California county agrees to jail headscarves

A Southern California county has settled a lawsuit and will allow jailed Muslim women to wear headscarves. Jameelah Medina said her religious freedom was violated by San Bernardino County deputies who made her remove the covering. Under the settlement released Monday, Muslim women can remove their own headscarves in a private area while being searched and the county will provide a temporary head covering. The county will also pay plaintiff Medina $45,000 in damages to settle her lawsuit. It did not acknowledge any wrongdoing. Medina was arrested in December 2005 in Pomona for having an invalid train pass. She spent a day in jail, but was never prosecuted in the case.
