Ex-Nazi officer to face German court

A Munich court is considering whether an 89-year-old former Nazi officer convicted of killing 14 civilians in wartime Italy is fit to stand trial in Germany for those same crimes. A court-appointed expert said Josef Scheungraber is fit to appear in court for a few hours at a time, due to his advanced age. Scheungraber was stationed in Italy during World War II as the commander of a mountain infantry battalion. Prosecutors accuse him of ordering his troops in June 1944 to kill civilians in Falzano di Cortona as retribution for the killing of two German soldiers. Scheungraber denies the charges but was convicted in absentia in 2006 by an Italian military court. The Munich court was deliberating Monday.
