Holocaust scholars back Sudan genocide case

Dozens of the world's leading Holocaust scholars are appealing to the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to pursue his indictment of Sudan's president on charges of genocide in Darfur. The 125 scholars have signed a letter to Luis Moreno-Ocampo urging him to resist pressure to drop the case against President Omar al-Bashir. They say the case would "deter future atrocities." The appeal came Monday as Moreno-Ocampo published an expanded version of his charges against al-Bashir. It accuses him of employing all the tools of state in an attempt to eliminate three rebellious tribes in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Judges have not yet responded to the prosecutor's request for an arrest warrant.
