A top Japanese official said Monday it is extremely regrettable that North Korea missed a deadline to shut down its nuclear reactor, but added that Tokyo would not seek to set a new date.
Yasuhisa Shiozaki, the chief Cabinet spokesman, said it is "not appropriate" to set a new deadline and instead insisted that the North respect its promises.
"It is extremely regrettable that North Korea did not follow the agreement," he said. "North Korea is in a position to immediately implement the agreement."
Shiozaki was referring to an agreement made during multilateral talks in February that the North would shut down its main nuclear reactor and allow international inspections.
