Karzai: Obama victory heralds new era for US, entire world

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the election of Barack Obama as America's first black president heralds a new era for the United States and the rest of the world. But Karzai also made his first demand for the president-elect, saying that the killings of Afghan civilians at the hands of the US and other foreign troops in the country must stop. By electing Obama, American people have taken themselves "and the rest of the world into a new era, the era where race, color and ethnicity ... will also disappear as a factor in politics in the rest of the world," Karzai said Wednesday. Speaking on the grounds of the presidential palace in Kabul, Karzai said he hopes the elections "will bring peace to Afghanistan, life to Afghanistan and prosperity to the Afghan people and the rest of the world."
