US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday that Turkey's elected government is pulling the country toward Europe.
Rice told lawmakers at a Senate hearing that the United States supports Turkey's democracy. Turkey, she said, has supported Iraq's new government and has been moving actively toward embracing Europe in recent years.
"The history of the last few years has been a good relationship with Turkey," Rice said.
Turkey is looking to join the European Union. It opened entry talks in October, 2005, but the EU virtually halted these because of Turkey's refusal to recognize EU member Cyprus.
