Snowstorm, avalanches and cold kill 85 people in western Afghanistan

Heavy snow, avalanches and cold weather have killed at least 85 people in western Afghanistan in recent days, officials said Tuesday. In hardest hit Badghis province in the northwest, avalanches and continuing snowstorms have killed 60 people in the past four days, said Badghis Gov. Ashraf Nasiri. He said villagers have lost thousands of cattle, but have not received any government aid or other assistance. Ten people, including two children, have died due to bad weather in neighboring Ghor province, said provincial police chief Shah Jahan Noori.
