UN rights chief criticizes Afghanistan executions

The UN's top human rights official criticized on Tuesday Afghanistan for executing five convicted murderers. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said that she wanted Afghanistan to stop carrying out death sentences until its legal system could guarantee due process and a fair trial. Her spokesman, Rupert Colville, said that the men were hanged in Kabul, Herat and Jawzjan provinces over the past four days. He said that more than 100 prisoners in Afghanistan are currently on death row. He told reporters in Geneva that the country planned to carry out further executions in the coming days.
