US agreement to increase aid to Jordan until 2013

The Bush administration is hoping to lock in for the next five years a massive increase in aid to Jordan it first gave in 2008. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Jordanian Foreign Minister Salaheddine al-Bashir on Monday signed an agreement that would extend until 2013 a 48 percent rise in US aid to the crucial Middle East ally that the administration announced in January. If agreed by Congress and the next administration, Jordan would receive $660 million in aid each year, $360 million in economic support money and $300 million in military aid, "to help meet shared goals of enhanced strategic dialogue and increased military cooperation." The Jordanian Embassy in Washington said the agreement "reaffirms the strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries."
