Vladimir Putin may return to Kremlin in 2009

The Russian daily Vedomosti reported Thursday morning that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev may resign from his post in 2009 to pave the way for Vladimir Putin's return to the Kremlin. Putin served as president for eight years before Medvedev won the presidential election in March 2008. The newspaper reported that the Russian Parliament proposed legislation on Wednesday that would see the presidential term in Russia extended from four to six years. According to the report, Medvedev is due to pass widely unpopular legislation related to reforms and social issues after which he would resign "so that Putin would be able to serve as President for a term longer than eight years", wrote Vedomosti. Putin's spokesman denied the reports.
