Report: Iran begins air defense war games

Iran's official news agency said on Monday that the country's warplanes and air defense units were taking part in ongoing war games. The war games follow Israel's major aerial exercise over the eastern Mediterranean in June which was widely interpreted as a rehearsal for a possible strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The United States and its western allies accuse Iran of embarking on a nuclear weapons program. Iran denies the claim and insists the program is only for peaceful purposes. The IRNA news agency's report quotes senior air force commander Gen. Ahmad Mighani as saying dozens of jet fighters and air bases across the country are taking part in the war games. He did not say when the exercise began.
