Abuse trial of Jerusalem mother postponed to next month

The trial of an American-Israeli mother of eight suspected of severely abusing her children in her Jerusalem home together with a group of men was postponed to May 22 after her lawyer asked Wednesday to review her complete police file.
The 38-year-old woman, who was indicted in a Jerusalem court earlier this month, will confess to some of the allegations against her but will contest others, her attorney, Devorah Atieh, said.
The Jerusalem District Court is expected to decide on Thursday whether to accept the prosecution's request to remand the suspect for the duration of her trial, or to place her under house arrest at her father's home near Jerusalem.
According to the charge sheet, the mother forced her children to eat feces, locked them in a suitcase for three days, repeatedly beat, whipped, and shook them, burned their hands with a lighter and a heater, and gave them freezing showers.
Her three-year-old son is unconsciousness in a Jerusalem hospital with severe brain damage after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
The alleged ringleader in the abuse, Elior Chen, fled to Canada last month, but is believed to have since left for a third country.
