Magen David Adom (MDA) Director-General Eli Bin was questioned by Tax Authority officials in Rishon Lezion on Tuesday on suspicion of evading NIS 176 million in taxes linked to the import of various equipment and spare parts used in ambulances.
The Tax Authority also suspects Bin of exercising influence over MADA tenders in order to ensure that they would be won by associates.

In a statement released on Tuesday, MADA said, "in accordance with the MDA law that gives an exemption from paying taxes, MDA contacted the director of customs to discuss taxation of medical equipment."
It added, "For the last six weeks, they have been looking into it, with the full cooperation of MDA. During the examination, evidence was provided by executives of the organization, both senior and less senior, and among those asked to provide answers were the head of the financial branch and the MDA Director-General."
Bin was reportedly released after being questioned, with bail amounting to NIS 50,000.
In March, MDA spokesman Yeroham Mendola was arrested after being found in possession of a false police ID. Mendola was stopped while driving recklessly on Highway 6 with lights and siren, when an officer from the Netanya police station discovered that Mendola was not responding to an emergency.
After stopping the spokesman, the police officer noticed a police badge in Mendola's posession. Mendola was taken for questioning and subsequently, the police found that the badge was stolen from a Traffic Police inspector five years earlier. He claimed that his children found the ID.
