Jerusalem police on Thursday forbade an east Jerusalem hotel from hosting a political gathering sponsored by Hamas, police said.
The planned Palestinian meeting, entitled "Jerusalem after the elections," was to have taken place Thursday at the city's Ambassador Hotel under the auspices of Hamas and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
The police order against the gathering, which was
delivered Thursday morning to the hotel, was signed by Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra.
Palestinian political activity in Jerusalem is
forbidden according to the now-moribund Oslo Accords.
Police have said that they would rigorously enforce the law and would act with force against Hamas activities in the city, despite the group's upset victory in January's Palestinian elections.
In response to the police crackdown, Hamas officials have been holding some of their Jerusalem-related events in Arab villages adjacent to the city.
