Policeman convicted for violence during Amona evacuation

Police officer David Atiya has been convicted by a Jerusalem Magistrates Court on Monday for head-butting a protester during a demonstration against the evacuation of the West Bank outpost of Amona in 2006. Atiya, of Petah Tikva, was charged with assaulting the demonstrator without provocation, head-budding teenager David Ledwin in his eye. The conviction marks the end of a Police Investigation Department(PID) inquiry, which was launched after the PID received a complaint by the Human Rights in Judea and Samaria organization, which gave police a video of the incident. In its ruling, the court said there was no justification for Atiya's assault.
