BBQ fire rages through park

Picnickers responsible for Park Hashlulit fire.

A large fire that burned though much of Netanya's Park Hashlulit last week, destroying the habitats of many rare amphibians, birds and animals, was apparently caused by picnickers who failed to extinguish their barbecue properly, reports www.mynet.co.il. The fire, which started in the northern part of the park, quickly raged through most of it, burning down eucalyptus trees, shrubbery and undergrowth, and destroying the homes of many rare species. According to the report, four teams of firefighters took four hours to bring the blaze under control. They initially suspected that arsonists started the fire, but then found that it had emanated from an un-extinguished barbecue. Investigations are continuing, but a municipal spokesman said planned activities at the park would not be cancelled.
