Firefighting officials are warning that a disaster is just a matter of time if something is not done about illegally installed gas balloons in the poorer neighborhoods of Tel Aviv, reports Yediot Tel Aviv. A man was severely injured and several apartments were damaged in the Hatikva neighborhood in an explosion caused by a gas leak last week. A similar explosion killed two men in the same neighborhood four years ago.
According to the report, the firefighters say that authorized gas companies know how and where gas balloons should be installed, including not placing them next to supporting walls which would collapse in the event of an explosion. But "pirate" gas balloons have not necessarily been positioned or connected properly, and are dangerous.
"It takes just a few minutes of gas leaking for an explosion to follow," one firefighter pointed out. Firefighting officials said that even though they have warned the city that most gas balloons in the Hatikva neighborhood are illegal and therefore dangerous, "to our sorrow we do not have the means to enforce the required standards."
