5 killed, 17 wounded in Sadr City clashes, Iraqi police say

Iraqi police and hospital officials say five people have died and 17 have been wounded in overnight clashes in Baghdad's Sadr City. Officials at two local hospitals say the injured include two women and four children. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Police speaking anonymously for the same reason also say that a US Stryker armored personnel carrier was destroyed in the clashes that started during the night and continued until Sunday morning. The US military has no immediate comment. The fighting comes a day after the Iraqi government relaxed security measures in Sadr City and the Shula neighborhood. Both of which are strongholds of Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia.
