Abbas calls for national dialogue among Palestinians

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has ended a visit to Syria without meeting officials from the rival Hamas group. Abbas on Tuesday called on Palestinian factions to take part in talks to restore unity, and he did meet with Hamas allies in Islamic Jihad during his three-day visit. But Abbas has said he will not talk to Hamas until it gives up power in Gaza, which the militant group seized a year ago. Syria is home to several Palestinian factions and has said it will support any reconciliation efforts. Syrian President Bashar Assad met with Abbas on Sunday after talking with Hamas's exiled leader, Khaled Mashaal.
