Palestinian Authority president arrives in Syria

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Syria and said he will speak with Syrian officials about the Middle East peace process and attempts to end Palestinian infighting. Abbas is not expected to meet officials from the rival Hamas group, which is based in Syria. Abbas told reporters upon his arrival Saturday that his visit is aimed at coordinating with Syria on the peace process. Syria is holding indirect peace talks with Israel through Turkish mediation. Abbas is scheduled to meet Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday and brief him on recent meetings between Hamas and his Fatah group in Egypt. Fatah and Hamas have been at odds since the latter's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007.
