US military says Shi'ite extremists behind deadly car bombing in Baghdad

The US military believes a Shi'ite "special group" is responsible for the deadly car bombing on a commercial street in a Shi'ite neighborhood of Baghdad.
US spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Stover says intelligence information corroborated by multiple sources indicates that a special group led by Haydar Mehdi Khadum al-Fawadi is behind the bombing Tuesday evening in the Hurriyah district.
Stover says the aim was to incite Sunni-Shi'ite violence and prevent Sunnis displaced by sectarian cleansing from returning to the neighborhood. The US believes Shiite special groups are backed by Iran.
Iraqi officials say more 50 people died in the blast, but Stover says the US can confirm 27 deaths.
