Ministerial committee to vote on allowing women to head religious courts

The ministerial committee on legislation will vote Sunday on a bill that would permit women to hold administrative positions in religious courts.The bill, sponsored by MK Gila Gamliel (Likud), would end a glass ceiling that has barred women from obtaining such posts.“The bill will go a long way toward improving the status of women in religious courts,” Gamliel said.“Women are just as affected by religious courts as men, so the situation that they cannot serve as judges must be changed. This would be a small step to end illegal discrimination.”The committee will also vote on two proposals by Knesset members from the Hatnua party of Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who heads the committee.A proposed bill by MK Meir Sheetrit would prevent people from receiving a salary from working on Election Day if they do not vote.And a legislation sponsored by Elazar Stern would require government documents to include the Hebrew date.
