A surprise in the car reliability data collected by the Shagrir towing company. Toyota, which led the ranking in the last three years, is only ranked 4th now, with Honda knocking it off the top spot in the reliability of one-year old cars, Yedioth Ahronoth has learned. Shagrir, the largest roadside assistance and towing company in Israel, has 680 thousand members, who provide a huge statistical sample for checking the number of faults per vehicle. This is data that the car importers have always kept hidden. The data confirms the myth that Japanese cars are more reliable than others, with European and Korean cars not achieving the top spots in the reliability rating. From the summary of the year 2007 data it seems that Honda has gone to the top of the new car reliability rating, followed by Volkswagen and Suzuki. Toyota slips to the fourth spot, after starring for three years at the top, and Skoda surprising by making the top five. This is the first time that two European makes have made it into high places. In the premium category, the top three cars are European: BMW, Mercedes and Audi. In the one to two years old cars group, the first six places are occupied by Japanese cars, and here too Honda is first, followed by Daihatsu, Subaru, Toyota, Mazda and Suzuki. In the premium category the first three cars are the same, but this time in a different order: Mercedes is first, BMW second and Audi third. With 4 to 6 year old cars, the top eight are Japanese, with Subaru the most reliable, Honda second, followed by Daihatsu, Toyota, Suzuki, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan. In the premium category it changes again, with BMW again overtaking Mercedes. With cars over 6 years old, the 8 top cars are Japanese again: Toyota takes the first spot, Mazda is second, Honda third, Suzuki fourth and Subaru fifth. In the premium category Mercedes overtakes BMW.
From an analysis of road assistance and towing in 2007, it seems that some 44% of the service calls were due to electrical and electronic faults, 5% due to the fuel system, 9% due to the cooling system, 8% due to transmission problems and 20% from engine components.
