The number of construction starts of new housing was down 2.6 per cent in the first half of 2006, compared with the last six months of 2005, while the completion of new housing dropped 8.8% during the same period.

In the first half of 2006, about one third of construction starts for housing were in the central district. Housing starts in the Tel Aviv area though rose 38% over the first half of last year, while housing starts were up 21.4% in the Jerusalem area and up 6.9% in the south. The rate of housing starts was down 20.3 per cent in Judea and Samaria.
