A senior soccer official in the Israel Football Association was arrested on Monday on charges of extortion, according to media reports.
The executive and dozens of others were detained in connection with an investigation that is unrelated to sports. Nonetheless, the charges are severe enough that observers anticipate a full-blown scandal that will generate considerable media attention in Israel.
According to investigators, the suspects extorted businessmen who were forced to pay sums of money totaling dozens of millions of shekels. Police say the suspects resorted to force, violence, and the threat of weapons including grenades and guns.
More details are expected in the next few hours.
