Ashkelon native Slava Zingerman won the NCAA fencing title in men's epee last Friday at Drew University. Zingerman, 23, is a freshman at Wayne State University. He won seven of his nine bouts during the round-robin Friday morning to earn the No. 2 seed in the semifinals. In his first semifinal match, Zingerman defeated Wayne State teammate Marek Petraszek 15-8. In the final, Zingerman defeated top-seeded Benjamin Bratton, a senior at St. John's, 15-13. Epee, along with foil and saber, is one of three different types of swords used in fencing. Epee is similar to a dueling sword, or rapier, common in Europe in past centuries. It is different than other events, since the whole body can be a target. Epee is the most popular event in fencing, though not necessarily the easiest. Prior to attending Wayne State, Zingerman was an accomplished athlete, fencing in Israel. He won the Senior National Championship in Israel last year and placing second at the Junior World Cup in Spain in 2003. Zingerman won the epee event at the Midwestern Fencing Championship on March 3.
