"The targeted ISIS senior leader, Hamza al-Homsi, was killed," the Defense Department said.
The operation was approved by US President Joe Biden earlier this week and carried out within the past 24 hours.
The jihadist group killed thousands of Yazidis, enslaved 7,000 and displaced most of the 550,000-strong community from their ancestral home.
The attack is the latest example of the growing insecurity that has spread to nearly every corner of Africa's most populous country.
Turkey's foreign affairs ministry said on Twitter the assets of seven individuals or legal persons involved in financing for the group were frozen.
