Anonymous slow dancers sway in TA

The slow dance marathon is part of an installation to be created by internationally known video-artist Christodoulos Panayiotu.

Starting April 5, 48 couples will each dance for one hour during 48 continuous hours of slow-dancing to standards by such as Diana Ross, Lionel Ritchie, Bonnie Taylor and others. The slow dance marathon is part of an installation to be created by internationally known video-artist Christodoulos Panayiotu that seeks to explore the "intimate-personal connection of the individual between himself and his surroundings" through the simple device of the prolonged hug required in the slow dance partnership. None of the 96 people involved in the marathon, chosen from applicants Panayiotu met at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, know each other. The Tel Aviv marathon is part of a wider project of slow dance marathons that the artist puts on in urban public spaces. It started at Saloniki last year and ran 24 hours. From here the marathon will move to Istanbul where it will last 72 hours, adding a day at each space. Eventually Panayoiotu will combine all into a video art piece that will be exhibited in galleries all over the world, including the Raw Art gallery in Jaffa that is sponsoring the artist together with the Tel Aviv Municipality.
