Winter has finally arrived in the Holy Land, but the last thing you want to put on over the polished outfit you agonized over is your oversized, frumpy winter coat that makes you look like a giant marshmallow.

It's freezing, it's rainy and you have no choice but to leave the warmth of your home to go to work/class/dinner with friends. Winter has finally arrived in the Holy Land, but the last thing you want to put on over the polished outfit you agonized over is your oversized, frumpy winter coat that makes you look like a giant marshmallow.
It may be warm and it may protect you from the harsh winds, but it makes you look about as attractive as do the old, comfy sweatpants you wear around the house.
Now's the time to splurge on one fabulous coat that will shield you from the elements and make you look so good you'll want to wear it even once you get indoors. Though a great coat may be costly, it will usually last for winters to come, especially here, where you need it for only a few months a year. And while outerwear trends are updated every year, the perfect coat never goes out of style.
When shopping for a coat, there are a number of details to consider. The region of the country you live in determines whether you need a full-blown, down-filled, fur-lined coat or whether a simple trench or wool pea coat will suffice. Puffy jackets are more essential in the Jerusalem area than in Tel Aviv, where for most of the winter you can get away with a stylish jacket paired with a scarf and gloves.
If your area receives a lot of rain, a waterproof exterior and hood are musts, whereas if rain is rare, suede and leather exteriors trap warmth and look elegant, and you can always carry an umbrella for the occasional drizzle.
Golbary, Zara's, Adidas and North Face offer a couple of puffy jackets (often with fake fur-lined hoods), but the majority of Israeli designers this season stuck to chic, knee-length wool coats.
The sexy silhouettes of the long coats offered by Maya Negri, Naama Bezalel and Eliana offer a touch of feminine elegance with fur collars and lapels or a wrap belt. The bright red wool coat in Zavaron Lavan's collection lands right above the knee and lends a bright sassiness to an otherwise dreary winter day.
Dorit Sadeh's line also boasts a loud, long red coat made entirely of a soft, warm fleece that clings beautifully to your figure, along with a black-and-white checkered wrap coat that goes with every outfit you can think up. The best part of these coats is the numerous designs and colors available, and it's up to you to pick the combination that looks best (and then buy yourself a matching scarf, gloves and a hat).
But the rage this season seems to be the military-style trench coat. Appearing everywhere on the catwalks and in the collections of Kala, Daphna Levinson for HDL, Adidas, Lee and Tali Rokni, among others, the trench-inspired jackets come buttoned and belted, short and long, and look fantastic bundled up with a scarf and hat or flying open in the breeze on particularly warm, sunny days. The versatile coat is also great for rain and compliments any outfit underneath, but might not provide enough warmth for colder areas of the country.
