Forty-two pianists from 21 countries, plus six on standby, will participate in the 12th Arthur Rubenstein International Piano Competition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (TAMA) from March 9-27.
The 28 men and 20 women chosen were picked from 142 applicants from 37 countries. Russians head the list with seven, followed by five from the US and Korea and four each from Israel and the Ukraine. There are two from China and two from Taiwan. Other countries include Georgia and Poland (three each), Australia, Croatia, Estonia and Serbia.
Last year's winner, Alexander Gavrylyuk, will open this year's competition at a gala concert at TAMA on March 8. The tri-annual event was founded in 1973 by Ya'akov Bistritsky and is run by the Rubenstein Trust.
