The summer side of wine

Wine and summer foods are best mates: Keep the heavy and expensive bottles in the cellar a little longer, as they are usually too rich and have too much alcohol. When buying a bottle for your next barbecue party, what you should be looking for is crisp, light and fruity wine. At this time of year, with so much hot weather still ahead, some admirable wines are being launched by local producers. Here are my recommended wines for this summer: Yatir, Sauvignon Blanc 2005: Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite summer whites as the grape is naturally high in acidity and has flavors of citrus fruit that are just wonderful on a hot summer day. It offers lots of ripe fruit flavors, followed by a long finish. NIS 59 Yatir, Shani, 2005: Named after its exceptional color and a village in the Yatir forest, this rose is made of 50% merlot and 50% syrah grapes. It shows delicate fruitiness with hints of rose petals and a light acidity that makes it the ideal accompaniment for summer foods. NIS 59 Binyamina, Sauvignon Blanc, Special Reserve 2005: Rich, creamy and loaded with lush, ripe fruit flavors like peaches and melons. With only 12% alcohol, this wine has the right amount of sweetness and is balanced by a nice citrus finish. NIS 43 Binyamina, Gewurztraminer, Special Reserve 2005: The grapes for this wine came from a vineyard at Kfar Tabor in the Galilee. It is a lively balanced wine featuring litchi and citrus aromas and refreshing acidity This white is the ideal food-friendly wine for a summer dinner. NIS 43 Saslove, Merriage Adom, 2003: Winemaker Barry Saslove combined Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz grapes for this interesting wine. Aged for 20 months in eight different kinds of barrels, this elegant wine has an exciting complex of aromas and flavors. Perfect served slightly chilled with red meat on a summer evening. NIS 82 Tulip, Syrah Reserve 2004: I usually find most syrah too heavy for summer drinking, but this version is a bit different. A soft, gentle wine with some vanilla character along with a bit of spiciness and blackberry flavors. It has a fresh, lively character that makes it an ideal summer red. NIS 75
