New direction: Opel is launching a budget-friendly electric Jeep

The replacement for the Crossland will have a new name and a platform that supports both electric and gasoline propulsion. It is expected to arrive in Israel by the end of the year.

Remember the Frontera? Opel's small off-road vehicle from the 90s, a sibling to the Isuzu Rodeo, is no longer with us, but its name is making a comeback in a completely different model. This time, it's a small crossover that will use the platform of Stellantis.

Inside the cabin, there are two 10-inch screens for infotainment and the dashboard, as well as a dedicated docking station that will allow using a mobile device as a multimedia screen through an app, enabling control through the steering wheel controls. The image of the passenger compartment shows that Opel continues to maintain a combination of touchscreen operation alongside physical climate control buttons.

Full dimensions of the vehicle were not revealed at this stage, except for the cargo volume data which stands at 460 liters (50 liters more than the Crossland).

Like the dimensions, the propulsion systems were not disclosed, except for the statement that it will offer a choice between all-electric or hybrid-petrol propulsion that will use a 48V battery. However, using the platform that serves the new small cars at Stellantis like the electric Citroen C3, allows us to fairly confidently assume what will power it. In the electric version, it will be a 113 hp engine that drives the front wheels and an LFP battery with at least 44 kWh which, in coordination with Citroen, offers a range of 320 km.

The equipment of small, simple, and relatively cheap cars with small batteries is faithful to the manufacturer's perception that these cars are intended to be vehicles for relatively short-range use. This also allows her to lower the car's prices as much as possible, so the Frontera is expected to be cheaper than the Corsland.

But that is one possibility, as the same platform that serves Fiat 600, Peugeot 2008, Jeep Avenger, Opel Mokka, and in the very near future also Lancia Epsilon and Alfa Milano, can also accommodate a different version of the engine, with 156 horsepower and a 54 kWh battery and a range of about 400 km. And it is not unlikely that it will even be offered in two versions of drive and pricing accordingly.

The gasoline alternative is expected to be based on the 1.2-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 136 hp. The gearbox will be a dual-clutch automatic with 7 gears.

Opel's importer to Israel reported that the Frontera is expected to arrive here later this year.
