Abbas sets May 4 date for Palestinian elections

Palestinian Authoirty President Mahmoud Abbas said Monday that he hoped Palestinian elections would be held on May 4.

"I hope, God willing, that the elections will be on May 4," Abbas said according to the British daily Telegraph.

Abbas made the comments during a meeting in Vienna with Austrian President Heinz Fischer after meeting with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in Cairo last week.

Leaders of the rival Palestinian faction have been working for the last number of months to end a longstanding schism between the two groups in order to craft a unity Palestinian government and prepare for elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
