A Border Police officer was lightly injured in an attempted ramming attack at the Kiosk Checkpoint in Abu Dis near the settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim, east of Jerusalem, on Tuesday.
The incident began as a Palestinian driver was spotted driving at a high speed towards the checkpoint. A Border Police officer signaled to the driver to stop, but the driver continued, swerved from the road and smashed into the checkpoint, injuring her. The driver then exited his vehicle towards the Border Police officers and was shot by the officers. The Border Police officer who was injured was transferred for treatment at a hospital.
Ahmed Mustafa Erekat, 27, a resident of Abu Dis, was identified as the terrorist in the attempted ramming by Palestinian media. According to Palestinian reports, he was on the way to his sister's wedding in Bethlehem. Erekat's body was reportedly seized by Israeli security forces.
Clashes broke out in Abu Dis between Israeli security forces and Palestinians after Erekat's death was reported, according to Palestinian reports.
In May, a Border Police officer was moderately injured in a ramming and stabbing attack at the Kiosk Checkpoint. The terrorist who carried out the attack was shot and killed by Israeli security forces.
The attack comes as tensions rise amid promises by Israeli officials to annex parts of the West Bank as early as July.
