Carter to travel to N. Korea to secure American's release

Former US president Jimmy Carter plans to visit North Korea to attempt to secure the release of an American serving eight years of hard labor there, Foreign Policy magazine said Monday.

Aijalon Mahli Gomes was arrested in April for illegally crossing North Korea's border with China. State media said he attempted to commit suicide owing to "disappointment and despair at the US government that has not taken any measure for his freedom."

Carter would be traveling to North Korea as a private citizen, Foreign Policy magazine said, as did Bill Clinton when he successfully secured the release of reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee, arrested for the same offense.
